Student Support and Services

At Carlow Institute of Further Education and Training, we know people sometimes need a little extra help during their studies, and we aim to offer everyone access to support. This could be helping hand with parts of the course, or advice and guidance about career choices and options. Our Student Support team aims to help you set you ‘on-track’ for an exciting career.

Your time at Carlow Institute of Further Education and Training is about learning, and also much more. Students are at the centre of our work – exactly as you would expect!

Our Student Support Services

General Facilities

The new Carlow Institute buildings includes a café- canteen with a range of food options. You can also enjoy your break periods in the landscaped outdoor areas. For those courses that require professional clothing, the new buildings include lockers and changing areas available to students. You can also access our professional gym and sports facilities.

Graduation

Our students’ achievement is very important at Carlow Institute of Further Education and Training, and each year we celebrate this at our formal graduation ceremony. Graduation is a fantastic celebration and marks a point on your journey towards your career and life goals.

Guidance Counsellors

Our Guidance Counsellors are specially trained to help you with information, advice and guidance. The Guidance team promotes workshops on CAO and UCAS applications and coordinates visiting speakers and opportunities to visit colleges and universities.

Learning Resource Centre

Our Learning Resource Centre includes our student library, and you will have access to books, information, learning-support materials, computers and photocopying. It is an open-access space, where you study and work on projects and assignments. In our new Institute buildings, our Student Support Team are based in the Learning Resource Centre. For students seeking additional help with their learning, workshops and assistance with academic work are available through the Learning Resource Centre. Moodle

All Carlow Institute students can access our Virtual Learning Environment Moodle. You’ll find assignment briefs, calendars, notes and resources online, helping you keep ahead in your work. Useful information and updates, and our policies and procedures, can be found on Moodle.

Student Council

Your opinion really matters to us and all students are automatically affiliated to the Student Council. The Student Council meets regularly, and helps communicate student views to us, which helps improve our services to you. The council also organises social events and each course is represented in its membership. Full details of how to get involved are available at the start of the course.

Sports and Societies

A variety of sports are offered at Carlow Institute, including swimming, soccer, basketball, and men and women’s GAA teams in football, hurling and camogie. Our soccer team competes in the Colleges and Universities Football League, with great success. You are welcome to participate in the sports team. The new building includes a fully-equipped gym and sports facility available to all registered students.

Scholarships

Carlow Institute offers a limited number of scholarships covering registration and/or other costs for sports, academic achievement and others each year. All registered students are entitled to apply for these scholarships, which are awarded on the basis of application and merit. Full details of the scholarships are available after registration.

Tutorials

Every course features a tutorial programme, and you will meet your tutorial group every week. The tutorial will help you set and review personal learning goals. Your tutorial teacher can direct you to extra support, and help with study skills, attendance and participation. Above all, your class tutorial teacher is a supportive face to help you make the most of your time with us.
